In America, we spend significant amounts (and even go into great debt) to buy a home, purchase a car, start a business. But rarely do we spend so much capital (not just money but time) into setting aside, designating, planning for the beauty in our lives. Wine, both as metaphor and real thing, offers a way for us to do that. For in planning for a life with wine, we choose to put pleasure, a considered, thoughtful pleasure + joy, first. We put the consideration of our choices towards beauty, and actual places, actual people, actual things. In choosing wine, we choose not just ourselves but those closest to us, in ways that seek to draw out the best of all we have to offer.
Such things can be documented. Scattershot, filmed, recorded, the detritus of a love that just visited. Those things can be held in our hand. A book which marks each year, each wine, each party, each gathering, each loved one, each laugh, each joy. A kind of yearbook of the faithful, testament of our simple hopes. In the Book of Wine, each project participant will document his or her year in wine, with friends, at locations, connecting plan to map, enjoyment to design.
